Retrieval Questions

"Retrieval practice is a strategy in which bringing information to mind enhances and boosts learning. Deliberately recalling information forces us to pull our knowledge “out” and examine what we know."

How can students effectively learn?

Josh Collin - Exam Study Expert

The science of learning has come a long way in the last 10-15 years: we know now the most effective way to get information into memory is to practise pulling it OUT of memory.

Some people call it "active retrieval", I call it "retrieval practice". It's the same thing: each time you bring a piece of information to mind ("retrieve" it) from memory, your memory of that fact strengthens. It should feel effortful: there's no point testing yourself the instant after you've just read something as it will still be in your short-term memory; leave a little delay then see if you can remember it. Then try and remember it again after a longer delay (end of the day, say). Then again a couple of days later.

Lots of ways to implement this: I liked flashcards, or you could write up a set of quiz questions you know you'd need to answer correctly to get full marks on a topic.
